As of the 2011 census, the town had a population of 30,699 residents, with a significant majority (66.1%) identifying as White, 31% as Black African, and smaller percentages of Coloured and Indian/Asian communities. Afrikaans is the predominant first language, spoken by 64% of the population, followed by Sesotho (16.4%) and English (9%).

Industrial Significance

Sasolburg is renowned for its substantial industrial activities, primarily centered around Sasol's coal-to-liquid refinery, which converts coal into liquid fuels and chemicals. This refinery is one of only two operational coal-derived oil refineries globally.
