​Sebokeng is a significant township located in the Emfuleni Local Municipality within Gauteng's Sedibeng District, South Africa. Established in 1965, it has evolved into a vibrant community with a rich history and diverse demographics.​

Situated approximately 40 kilometers south of Johannesburg, Sebokeng lies between neighboring townships such as Evaton to the north and Sharpeville to the south. The area is part of the Vaal Triangle, which is renowned for its industrial significance.

History

The name Sebokeng translates to gathering place in Sesotho. The township was established in 1965 by the apartheid government to house Black South Africans working in the nearby industrial regions. Over the years, Sebokeng has been a focal point for political activism, notably during the 1984 protests against high rents and service charges, which led to significant confrontations with security forces.

Demographics

As of the 2011 census, Sebokeng had a population of 218,515 residents living in 60,793 households, covering an area of 46.45 km². The population is predominantly Black African (99.1%), with Sesotho being the most commonly spoken first language (64.6%), followed by Zulu (14.7%) and Xhosa (10.3%). ​
