SASOLBURG

On Tuesday, November 7, Sasol and Natref unveiled two projects aimed at improving ambient air quality in Metsimaholo.

The initiatives comprised the paving of a 1.6km road in Amelia and the enhancement of the satellite fire station in Zamdela, Sasolburg, officially handed over to Metsimaholo. The morning ceremony commenced with the ribbon cutting for the road, officiated by various government and Sasolburg officials, amid rainy showers.

The entourage then moved to the Harry Gwala Multipurpose Centre, inaugurating the satellite fire station, allowing public access. The ceremony concluded with a tour of the fire station, attended by dignitaries, including Metsimaholo mayor Jack Malindi and Fezile Dabi mayor Dennnis Khasudi, who expressed their gratitude.

Rightwell Laxa, Senior Vice President at Sasol’s Sasolburg and Ekandustria Operations, stated: “As Sasol, our commitment to driving sustainable improvement in our fenceline communities is motivated by our core values and shared interest in the safety of our people.”

Laxa highlighted the significance of the road and fire station infrastructures in ensuring road safety, quicker response to fires, and overall community safety.

The 1.6km road in Amelia aimed to reduce dust and enhance road safety during high traffic. It included a pedestrian walkway, bus shelters, speed humps, road markings, and signage, connecting multiple townships.

The upgraded satellite fire station at the Harry Gwala Multi-Purpose Sports Centre in Zamdela now houses a 6000-litre fire truck, ensuring quicker response times.

Renovation work included office space, ablution facilities, and the reception area enhancements, alongside an external structure for the fire truck.

Laxa concluded: “Safety remains a key priority for Sasol, and these infrastructures will fortify the municipality’s safety measures, ensuring better emergency responses for the fenceline communities.”
